There's Always Room for Dessert

I begin this blog post sitting in my twin bed that is 2 inches away from Taylor's twin bed on the right, and 2 inches from my new friends Tina's twin bed on the left. It's 11:00 pm and we just finished our first authentic Italian meal causing everyone to begin their food induced coma (I'm not counting the "Sicilian penne pasta dish" on the airplane as authentic). Lucky for yall though I took a three hour nap on the bus, so I am wide awake to update you about the day's events!!!

Quick Airplane Re-Cap

- so uncomfortable. So incredibly uncomfortable. No one could fall asleep the whole ten hours.
- the one time I managed to fall asleep for ten minutes I missed them giving out snacks.. Just my luck
- me and Janae watched risky business which, for future reference, could potentially get awkward due to some risqué scenes.... Should've been named risqué business! (bu-dum chhhh) Anyway, don't worry Mom, we fast forwarded through the scenes.
- thankfully, no one lost their luggage and we all made it on the bus!

The bus was like a giant cradle, rocking all of us sleep-deprived college kids to sleep; the bus went silent after 20 minutes. We stopped halfway at the Italian version of a "truck stop". Let me tell you something, America has been doing truck stops allllll wrong. This place had everything! All kinds of fresh sandwiches, muffins, donuts, croissants, pizza, a place where they will make steaks, chickens, and fancy meats for you, create your own pasta, and don't forget the three bottles of wine for 9 euros, what more could you ask for?!?

Still half asleep from the bus ride though, and not quite in the mood to test my stomach, I settled with a nice ham and cheese sand which with Milano cookies I saved from the airplane (I asked a flight attendant for the snack I missed 😎). This was a great decisions and I went straight back on the bus to continue sleeping. But first I took this picture, it strangely remind me of Peru.

When we finally arrived at the hotel we threw our bags in our rooms and quickly walked to the Pompeii site, it was 5:00 and the site closed at 7:30. Even though we were insanely rushed our silver lining was all the crowds were gone! Our teacher had been there earlier (the one not on the airplane with us, there are 2) and said the empty space we were standing now had 300 people there about two hours ago.

It's been awesome having Janae on the trip. She knows so much about archeology and the history and gets so excited it makes me excited. A few fun facts we learned today were:

1. There was no class separation in Pompeii. The rich, poor, old, and young, we're all found together after the volcanic explosion. They all lived next to each other and didn't think twice about it.

2. The first time someone tried to start digging for Pompeii they dug up a pornographic piece of art. They then told the Pope "oh no, there's nothing to see here!" Excavations did not begin until 100 years after that.

3. There's an temple named Isis that people used to go to for good luck. It's very unfortunately named. It made for a very confusing lecture, hearing about the beauty and wonder of Isis.

How we receive our lectures.

In returning from Pompeii, we changed our clothes, split a 6€ bottle of white wine between our room, and hung out in the lobby waiting for dinner. Everyone groaned a little about how wifi didn't work but mainly people were talking about how excited they were for the rest of the trip. All the girls (and 2 boys) seem really nice and friendly, I'm excited to get to know them!

We arrived at dinner and sat down at our 4 person table with Liba, Taylor, and Janae. They brought out our first dish which was pasta. We had the option between gnocchi and pesto bow tie pasta, I got the pesto. After adding excessive amounts of Parmesan cheese to my pasta, I finish most of it and they took it away. We were all looking at each other wondering how in the world we were supposed to eat a whole new dish on top of our carb overloading we just did. Somehow we found it in us to eat the crispy lemon chicken with olive oil and herbs. Needless to say, it was delicious. The third dish was French fries which we definitely appreciated, who doesn't love French fries?? Oh wait, Taylor. Taylor doesn't. She got peas instead. LOL. We ended our fantastic meal with a giant Nutella and chocolate chip cup of gelato. There's always room for dessert :)

One last thing then I promise I'm done. I just wanted to talk about the showers, or lack of. In Italy apparently they have tubs that look a little something like this..
What does one do with this?? Is everyone just always so relaxed they take baths everyday?? It was very awkward and I won't lie, I may have sprayed the walls a few times trying to rinse my hair.

So that was my day!! I will now fall asleep reading my Harry Potter book that I brought with me.

Goodnight!

P.S. - Today while we were walking around Pompeii we ran into an Econ professor at UGA!! What a small world!
